A Whole Bunch of Hairy Interconnected Problems

posted Tuesday, 19 May 2009

What do you do when you find yourself with a whole bunch of big hairy and frequently interconnected problems? If you're like most people, you get stressed. Go into despair. Get depressed (that's where you go when you conclude that it's hopeless). Do nothing. Wait for all the big hairy problems to go away spontaneously. Or run around, busily doing something in the hope that you'll hit on the magic bullet. In any case, running around keeps you from facing the reality. Denial, ah yes.

There are other options favored by spiritual or intuitive people. Get quiet. Breathe. Walk and talk to a Higher Power (yes, out loud; no, not on a crowded city street - it frightens the dogs). Visualize healing or living energy flowing through your whole body, starting at the top of your head and flushing your worry and confusion out through your feet. You can put hands on your primary energy (chakra) centers and feed yourself the strength. Anything that you do that does not have as its agenda Figuring the Answers Out will actually lead you closer to that goal than determined striving will. When you surrender your death-grip on the control stick, you allow your own inner wisdom (or the universal wisdom or God, as you prefer) to get a word in. You get answers when you stop looking for them and just give a great sigh and let go.

You can do other things after you have flushed the stress chemicals out of your body. You can use Goddess, Angel or other divination cards to give you suggestions about the problems - something that your control freak left and even right brains were incapable of finding. You can open a sacred or philosophical book at random, eyes closed, and see where your hand lands. You can call a pro like me.

When an idea drops softly into your consciousness, if you are quiet you will hear it.

If you do all of these good things and nothing is dropping into your consciousness, pick one thread of your big ball of hairy interconnected problems. Not yanking. Not demanding. Just gentle, continuous pressure. Keep meditating and keep pulling on the one string. Something will shift. You'll get an idea. Just a small idea. Do it. Keep pulling until that one problem thread just isn't yielding any more answers.

See how the big hairy ball has moved, ever so slightly. Pick another thread, intuitively if you have a gentle idea drop into your consciousness, and completely at random if it doesn't. Repeat this process. Stay quiet. Stay calm. In the space of a week, you will find yourself not only calmer, but also furthur along the road to real resolution - moving in the direction of your true life path - than you would be if you followed the American cultural norm of Making it Happen. Now.
